Five-element optimization

  1. Define the success metric. Write in one sentence what 'better' means for this skill or project. Measurable is mandatory. If you cannot measure, the loop has no signal to amplify.
  2. Shorten the signal delay. How long between an action and the feedback on that action? Cut that delay. Daily beats weekly. Real-time beats daily. Creative writing gets readers faster; sales calls get recorded and reviewed same day; code gets tested instantly.
  3. Reduce the noise. What feedback are you receiving that is not actually signal? Opinions from non-practitioners, aggregate scores that hide the specifics, feedback without context. Remove or downweight noise sources. The remaining signal sharpens.
  4. Amplify the signal. Increase the clarity, specificity, and frequency of the real signal. Find one expert whose feedback is high-signal and weight theirs above the noise. Record sessions so you can review them. Compare to your best previous work.
  5. Iterate weekly. Every week, review what the loop is telling you and adjust. Over time the loop itself improves, not just the skill it measures.
